Story is ok. But it seems like the director really didn't know what to do with the actors, so he told them to be as angry as possible for as long as possible. Lots of anger in this movie. If that doesn't make you feel good after a while, then this might not be the movie for you.
Also, the script isn't very good. At one point the mother and son are fused together into one body, and they have boils and blisters covering their entire bodies, and Cage looks at the rest of his family and says "everything is under control...

We HPL fans have waited a long time for someone to give one of his stories some decent production values. Good acting throughout, and just gross enough for horror fans. I hope Hollywood noticed that it can be done. I went to see this movie with low expectations, as in general Hollywood does such a poor job of book adaptions.
I was pleasantly surprised.
It has a slow start, building up the tension nicely and builds up to a crescendo of Lovecraftian horror.
I liked how it avoided following a lot of usual horror tropes and the whole thing is left with a question at the end about what really happened.
Definitely worth seeing. Just don't expect a usual Hollywood horror movie.

A most excellent a movie, the totally radical return of mega director Richard Stanley with the Rage Cage himself Nicolas Cage starting in this totally tubular movie, it has some rocking death metal, pretty colors and some other pretty rad stuff, see it dooooooode. Along with Burning, it is the best movie that I have watched so far this year. Windows on the World, despite the fact that it takes place in the weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, is a film that is urgently for our time. It is a hero's journey of a son trying to find his father in that grief-stricken landscape and the characters stand in for the millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, who contribute in their everyday lives, to the American landscape. The film seeks to counter the narrative that's all-too-prevalent in today's political and media landscape by telling a story set in America's biggest and most diverse city, at its darkest time. The script by playwright and novelist Robert Mailer Anderson (who also produced the film) is wise and completely engaging; he creates indelible characters who are ultimately inspiring and uplifting. Edward James Olmos gives what he considers to be the performance of a lifetime, and the rest of the cast is terrific as well-with a special shout-out to Glynn Turman. The direction, by Olmos's son Michael, is sure-handed, getting terrific performances from his cast, including his father, in this father-son story, and it's beautifully lensed. The music, including jazz and a title track written by Anderson, is pitch-perfect, supporting the story without getting in the way. This film should be seen by everybody-and I'm sure it will be in mainstream distribution soon, as this is a time when, although the major studios may have turned their backs on substance, terrific indie films like this one have many other possible venues. If you can't see it at a film festival, like I did, keep a keen eye out for it. Terrific and inspiring.

Michael Lomonaco Born January 2, 1955 (age 65) Brooklyn, New York City, New York, United States Education New York City Technical College Culinary career Current restaurant(s) Windows on the World Porter House New York Michael Lomonaco (born January 2, 1955) is an American chef, restaurateur, and television personality. He is best known as the chef/director for Windows on the World, the restaurant located atop the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The restaurant was destroyed in the September 11th attacks, and all of the staff members who were working in the restaurant at the time of the attack died. Lomonaco survived because he was in the tower's lobby during the attacks and was then evacuated from the building. He has rebounded with the opening of Porter House New York, which was named by Esquire magazine one of America's Best New Restaurants in October 2006. LeCirque and 21 [ edit] Lomonaco started his culinary education at New York City Technical College 's Hotel and Restaurant Management program, graduating in 1984. He quickly rose to fame during the 1980s at New York's famed restaurant Le Cirque, working under renowned chefs Alain Sailhac and Daniel Boulud. Later that decade, Lomonaco moved on to another legendary New York institution, 21 Club. He revitalized the restaurant, known for its storied history as a Prohibition-era speakeasy and celebrity patrons, by revamping the menu by eliminating some old Continental standbys in favor of updated American fare. Lomonaco remained at 21 until 1996. While at the restaurant, he published a book of recipes from the restaurant. Windows on the World [ edit] In 1997, Lomonaco took on the task of Executive Chef/Director for Windows on the World, located on the 106th and 107th floors of the North Tower of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. Again, he updated the menu from traditional French to modern American cuisine with great success. In response, the restaurant became one of America's highest grossing restaurants three years in a row. [1] As executive director, Lomonaco was responsible for the main dining room, as well as the smaller Wild Blue restaurant, and the bar called The Greatest Bar on Earth. [2] Lomonaco escaped the September 11 attacks when he stopped first at the lobby of 1 World Trade Center to get his glasses fixed. The first plane crashed when he was about to head upstairs, and he was evacuated from the lobby shortly afterwards. [3] After September 11, 2001 [ edit] After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the day on which many of his friends and coworkers died, Lomonaco became a consulting chef to Noche, a multi-story restaurant and nightclub in midtown Manhattan highlighting the cuisines of Latin America and the Caribbean. [4] Many former employees of Windows on the World also worked at this new venue along with Lomonaco; it debuted in 2002. However, Noche announced its closing in late 2004. He also served as a consultant for Guastavinos, a restaurant located under the Manhattan end of the Queensboro Bridge. In 2006, Lomonaco opened Porter House New York, an American grill in the newly opened Time Warner Center on the Columbus Circle. [5] The 250-seat restaurant with a view of Central Park South has garnered positive reviews for its contemporary American menu. [6] 7] Television and media career [ edit] Before a culinary career, Lomonaco's goal was to be an actor, which he pursued for eight years. [8] His training in this field has led the chef to combine his two passions in front of the camera. Lomonaco is the co-host of the Discovery Channel 's program Epicurious. Previously he hosted Michael's Place on the Food Network for three years. He has also made appearances on talk shows and cooking programs such as In Julia's Kitchen with Master Chefs. [1] He also guest starred in season five's episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, titled Disappearing Manhattan. Lomonaco has also been a featured chef on Great Chefs television. [9] Lomonaco is a co-author of The 21 Cookbook, published by Doubleday in 1995, commemorating his recipes at the famed restaurant. In 2004, he released "Nightly Specials: 125 Recipes for Spontaneous, Creative Cooking at Home. 10] He has written articles and recipes for many magazines, including New York magazine, Gourmet and Food & Wine. Teaching and charity [ edit] When not in his restaurant, Michael Lomonaco can be found teaching future chefs at City University of New York and Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan. He also makes appearances as a guest chef at the International Hotel Show, the Chicago Restaurant show and Festa Italiana Seattle. [11] After September 11, Lomonaco co-founded the Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund, in order to generate support for the families of all restaurant and food service workers lost in the attacks. He also participates in cooking events that benefit causes including the March of Dimes, City Harvest and Share Our Strength. So if this movie ignores the events of T3 as wiki indicates, does that mean that T3 is no longer part of the franchise? How can a sequel get away with ignoring the events of it's predecessor like that? The new Hollywood is making up some strange rules.

The movie looks good BUT YOU MISS RANDOLPH. Whoaaah. That hair. The rhythm section download music. The Atlanta Rhythm Section - Home Page Theyve been part of the Southern Rock scene for nearly 50 years. Their biggest hits include So Into You, Champagne Jam, Imaginary Lover, Homesick, and Spooky. But theres so much more... With 15 albums of outstanding songwriting and performances, The Atlanta Rhythm Section represents the good things the phrase “classic rock” implies. So read, watch, listen, enjoy - have yourself a “Large Time! ” Come Celebrate With Us At The Buckhead Theatre! Help us celebrate the season and a living legend at the legendary Buckhead Theatre just after Christmas. It will be a bit of a bitter sweet event but we really want you to join us wishing our ‘Old Buddy well. Legendary piano player, Dean Daughtry, has decided its time to get off the road. For nearly five decades, he has led ARS with his commanding talents. Dean deserves a huge party. Yall cmon! From humble beginnings in south Alabama, Dean began touring the world with Roy Orbison in the 60s. Working next with the Classics IV and then founding Atlanta Rhythm Section, Dean would become a living legend writing some of the greatest tunes ever recorded. Its fitting since so many of his road trips began here in Atlanta, the town will now serve as Deans official curtain call and final stop on the road. This is a great excuse to come to town and see the holiday lights. Sitting in the heart of ATL, the Buckhead Theatre anchors the vibrant music scene in the citys most vibrant neighborhood. Opened in 1931 and painstakingly restored in 2010, the theatre invites you through her original Art Deco doorway into an intimate interior now outfitted with state of the art lighting and sound systems. ‘Didnt I go there in the 80s? Yup, it was The Roxy back then. If you havent been to the renovated theatre, its definitely worth another visit. Some amazing shows are constantly being announced. Be sure to check out the Allman/Betts Band when theyre there. What a great band! For more information, click here... It's Been A Long Road Old Buddy. After decades of traveling and performing in front of millions, Dean Daughtry has decided its now time to get off that long road. As one of ARSs founding members and main songwriters Dean was truly instrumental to the bands success. His touch is obvious listening to any ARS record. His talents shine when you hear ‘So Into You, Imaginary Lover and any number of the great songs he was essential in penning. ‘Dog Days, ‘Normal Love, there are so many incredible ARS songs founded upon the incredible piano playing that Dean brought to the group. As the band approaches its 50th anniversary, we are truly disheartened that we will not have our ‘Old Buddy on the road with us. Dean is the longest riding member of Atlanta Rhythm Section having literally been on the road continuously for well over forty years. Some of you may have noticed his occasional absence over the past couple years. Weve been fortunate to have some very talented friends able to sit in when weve needed them. Lee Shealy, who we met through Andy Anderson, has performed with the band several times now and will man the piano for us into 2020. Lee grew up in Atlanta and were sure everyone will like him as much as we do. We hope that Dean and Donna enjoy a long and happy retirement together. And that Dean will really enjoy not having to rush to and through the airports anymore. Dean would like all of Atlanta Rhythm Sections fans to know how much he really appreciates them and how much he will miss seeing them. That isnt nearly as much as his fans and his friends in the band are gonna miss ‘Ole Ox. Winter Wonderland Tour 2020. Most of us are looking forward to bundling up and visiting some of the continents more heat challenged regions. However, our Florida contingent has hopelessly acclimated to the tropics and has a bit of trepidation. Snow boards and non-water skis arent a regular part of a southern boys upbringing so dont expect to see any of us on the slopes but we may get caught at the bar with one of those hot toddies. A local landmark, The Egyptian Theatre, in Park City will be one of our stops this winter. Saved from destruction in 1978, with the support of Mrs. Fields Cookies and an amazing community, the stately venue would go on to host The Sundance Film Festival. In the 90s, Save Our Stage Foundation stepped up to ensure The Mary G. Steiner Egyptian Theatre would flourish and enter the new millennium with all the glory she possessed when her doors opened, Christmas day in 1926. ARS looks forward to a long overdue visit to see our north of the border neighbors. Its been nearly thirty years since Atlanta Rhythm Section has been to Canada. That will be remedied soon when the band performs at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Enoch, Alberta. Itll be a scorching weekend in Alberta because our pals in Georgia Satellites are gonna heat it up the very next night. Hey Rodney! Can we stay for an extra day? Cmon to River Cree for the weekend. Its gonna be a fun one! For more information, click here... "The Atlanta Rhythm Section: The Authorized History. Is Now Available! Seasoned, southern author, Willie G. Moseley, has written an in-depth book about The Atlanta Rhythm Section. Years of research and extensive interviews are infused into the first and only authorized history of the band. A native and current resident of Alabama, Mr. Moseley effortlessly weaves the story of a band whose roots are so close to his own. Atlanta Rhythm Sections background is a history lesson of the music scene in the South during the 60s. Mr. Moseley details how Buddy Buie assembled a core group of incredibly talented southern musicians and developed the creative environment that enabled the ensemble to flourish and truly craft some amazing work. Buddy made real his dream of forming a super group to use as a vehicle for his songwriting skills, musical vision and business acumen. Buies efforts played out like an expertly conducted symphony and crescendo when Atlanta Rhythm Sections mainstream success peaked in the late 70s. What goes up. well, you can read the rest of that story too. Moseleys book delves into the struggles that follow the bands Top 40 success. He trails the bands twists and turns throughout the new millennium up to the present day. Published by Schiffer Publishing and available through many online retailers, “The Atlanta Rhythm Section: The Authorized History” is Mr. Moseleys thirteenth book. A senior writer of Vintage Guitar Magazine, he is News Editor emeritus for The Tallassee Tribune. LOOK for   "The Atlanta Rhythm Section: The Authorized History"   at your favorite retailer. Guess it comes with our advancing age but it seems like we begin hearing too often that someone we cherish has gone on to their great reward. The ARS organization had just begun recovering from the devastating 2015 loss of the bands founder, songwriter and producer, Buddy Buie, when we received additional blows in 2019. Founding member, songwriter, guitar player and the crux of ARSs success, J. Cobb, passed away in May. Although J. rarely performed with the band over the past few decades his touch has always had a significant impact on the band and will certainly continue to do so. His songwriting truly elevated our efforts and J. s skills as a guitar player always energized the bands performances. Buddy Buies long-time friend and business partner, Arnie Geller, passed away in July. His behind-the-scenes efforts were crucial to Atlanta Rhythm Sections success and simply cannot be overstated. Any type of positive association with such a great man is an overwhelming honor. Everyone can be certain that the kitchen in the great beyond has something tasty cooking in the oven and something smelling good on the stove. A few tasty schemes might be getting cooked-up there right now too. We will also be missing Terry Spackman, a long-time friend and ARS crewmember. Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and fans of Phil McCormack and legendary bass player, Larry ‘LJ Junstrom. Until we rock out together again. A. Heads Back to Texas Arlington Music Hall, Dosey Doe and One World Theatre With another chance to grab a cup of “the coffee that takes you away” and to perform at a few of the finest live venues anywhere in the USA, Atlanta Rhythm Section is slap happy to be returning to Texas. We will begin a mini tour of Texas just outside 'The Big D' at the historic Arlington Music Hall which premiered as a movie theatre in 1950. The first movie to be shown featured Shirley Temple and was followed by a memorable on stage performance by a local band The Flying Ranch Hands who later became known as The Light Crust Dough Boys. We continue to The Big Barn at Dosey Doe just outside Houston in The Woodlands. Not only is the coffee incredible but the food, the staff and the venue itself really stand out. If you like wood, youve got to check out this amazing place that features massive amounts of reclaimed timbers. Dosey Doe has won numerous awards including “Best Live Music Venue” and “Best Breakfast in The Woodlands”. If you cant catch our show, stop by for breakfast, BBQ, or some of their amazing coffee; maybe go see a different band. Theres always something going on at Dosey Doe. Try the country fried steak; its pretty darn good. Yum! We cant wait. Last but certainly not least, we visit the states capital, Austin, and yet another fantastic venue, One World Theatre. The heart of One World began beating when its founder, percussionist, Hartt Stearns, attended a seminar at UCLA by Brazilian musician, Mayuto Correa, with whom Hartt would study. This enlightening experience inspired a journey to create and share One World through artistic exchange and experience. Hartt would spend many years traveling and performing music. Eventually, his journey would lead to Austin where he would find Nada. The two eventually marry and together find One World Theatre. For two decades, OWT has been one of the premiere venues in a premiere music town. Amazing place and an amazing couple, we look forward to seeing you again! For more information about these shows, click here... A. Releases 2-Disc CD: One From the Vaults" Often described as a more radio-friendly version of Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers, the Atlanta Rhythm Section was one of many Southern Rock bands to hit the upper reaches of the charts during the late `70s. Hailing from the small town of Doraville, Georgia, the beginning of the Atlanta Rhythm Section can be traced back to 1970. It was then that a local recording studio was opened, Studio One, and the remnants of two groups (the Candymen and the Classics Four) became the studio's house band. One of the facility's head figures, Buddy Buie, soon began assembling the session band. After playing on several artists' recordings, it was decided to take the band a step further and make the group of players a real band, leading to the formation of the Atlanta Rhythm Section. This collection contains 10 tracks previously unavailable on compact disc. Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl. Then she learns that the aircraft was downed by a saboteur, so she sobers right up and sets out to kill the killer. Even though she dropped out before completing her B. S. in vigilante justice. Kidding. Actually, Stephanie was a "languages" student, which is fairly hilarious, since this is the sort of international thriller that pogos from Scotland to Spain to Morocco to New York to France without ever encountering anyone who doesn't speak English. That suits star Blake Lively, who demonstrates her fluency in multiple hairstyles but can't quite muster a British accent, let alone the German one needed to impersonate a Teutonic assassin. Co-produced by Barbara Broccoli, heiress to the James Bond franchise, The Rhythm Section imagines a sort of freelance female 007. Of the various Bonds, Stephanie is closest to the one played by Daniel Craig, who takes a lot of physical punishment and displays the resulting cuts and bruises. She's not a trained superspy, though, and despite her lust for retribution, more than once she is reluctant to use her self-issued license to kill. Stephanie wouldn't stand a chance against the movie's bad guys, in fact, if she didn't first high-tail it to the highlands for some brutal training by rogue ex-MI6 agent Iain Boyd (former pretty boy Jude Law in his new hard-man mode. Iain is the one who teaches Stephanie to control her "rhythm section" — her heartbeat and respiration — as she confronts an array of thugs and evil masterminds. Next stop is Madrid, where Stephanie pretends to be that German hitwoman as she buys info from Marc Serra (Sterling K. Brown) a rogue ex-CIA agent. He sends her in the direction of the Islamic terrorist implicated in the plane crash, although scripter Mark Burnell — adapting his own novel — is careful to establish that the ultimate villain is a cash-hungry sociopath unmotivated by any sort of dogma. The Rhythm Section was directed by Reed Morano (Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale) who deftly governs the movie's quickened pulse. Morano is a veteran cinematographer with a taste for deep shadows and hot whites, as well as bobbing handheld camerawork and jumpy cutting. (Even the soundtrack's odd mix of pop and rock songs, all oldies although sometimes in newer versions, is chopped and jumbled. The scenes move quickly and sometimes unexpectedly, and there's almost no downtime on Stephanie's quest. Aside for one brief moment on a Mediterranean ferry, she seems to teleport between locations. What are crucially missing from this scenario, besides sheer believability, are wit, ambiguity and irony. Tormented Stephanie has the emotional range of the sort of blithe roughneck once played by Steven Seagal or Jean Claude Van Damme, and for all her small failures she's seldom wrong about anything big. A sharper script would have made more of Stephanie's lack of experience. The amateur avenger could easily be played by the various spy-war veterans she meets, but her feelings seldom lead her off course. The Rhythm Section suggests that when an action hero regulates her heart and lungs, she boosts her brain into overdrive. That's a dubious premise for a movie that's not exactly smart.

Very inspiring! You make my day, once again, thanks Boomer. The gayest Terminator ever. I loved it bahaha 🔥. When I was little my drum set was set like that. Lol.

I personally havent seen much of Blake Livelys acting work in general, a distinction that will eventually be rectified. I did enjoy Lively a lot in “A Simple Favor” from a few years back in which she acted opposite Anna Hendrick. But even with the limited experience I have with her I personally havent seen much of Blake Livelys acting work in general, a distinction that will eventually be rectified. But even with the limited experience I have with her portfolio, I genuinely like Blake Lively. She is very stylish and influential in the fashion world. She loves to cook and even does plenty of baking in her spare time. I even follow Blake Lively on Instagram, hence why I know shes into culinary arts. Overall, she seems pretty cool and shows a laidback and natural personality that makes it easy for me to get behind. She was certainly the main reason and maybe the only reason why I decided to check out her latest film, “The Rhythm Section”. If you think about it, this is a rather odd name for a thriller of this kind. Right away, the best thing I can say about this film is that Blake Lively gives all her strongest efforts to make her role work and it doesnt go unnoticed. Lively does her part in putting as much personality as she can get for her leading role as written and directed. The film as a whole unfortunately is only half-baked at best from both a conceptual and executional perspective. As best as I can describe it strictly off the cuffs, the plot centers on a young woman, played by Lively, whose family died in a tragic plane accident a few years ago. Under her emotional grieving, she becomes a prostitute for reasons not very well explained. In fact, I dont even recall there even being a reason. One day, she comes across a mysterious man who informs her that the aforementioned plane accident was actually a terrorist attack. After said stranger is killed off from someone related to the incident, this woman decides to look up a connection that may help her solve this developing case. Her travels lead her to Dublin where a secret assassin, played by Jude Law, takes her captive and eventually trains her to become an assassin, again for reasoning Im still unable to comprehend. And the rest of the film consists of her going after these targets and fulfilling her mission or missions depending on how you look at it. Notice my uncertainty and confusion over what the plot is about, even though Ive simplified it to the best of my ability? Thats because the biggest problem with this film, that in my opinion hurts the film the most, is its lack of proper character development or any assemblage of world building. The films direction in the first half specifically is confused, as if they werent sure about what kind of film this was going to be. Its never clear what our lead has been doing in the years since the plane accident. I dont know why she ended up being a prostitute before she goes on this central crusade, even though she could have arguably found a better circumstance for herself anywhere else. It doesnt make sense why Jude Law treating Blake Lively like a prisoner is considered a charming/quirky character trait or a method to his bizarre training. The film fails to explain many abrupt or random details like the ones I described. The aspect of the film that best summarizes the experience in a nutshell would have to be the music. You see, its done well, but at times it feels a tad inappropriate for the situation at hand. The potential is there, Im just not sure that its utilized correctly. And thats my dominant sentiment towards “The Rhythm Section” and why Im giving it the score that I am. There are inspired tidbits every once in a while. Lively has an amusing counterattack in her training with Law when hes training for a heated car chase, she puts one car in reverse thats easily the funniest part of the film. Theres also a car chase that Lively finds herself in where it all takes place within one shot and youre looking from the perspective of the co-pilot seat. You see all the angles you want to see from the front to the back to the driver. This makes the chase sequence more convincing and I at least appreciate that scene for what it is. There at times later on in the film where Im thinking to myself, I could see individual things such as Blake Lively as an action heroine and a few choice scenes working better if the film surrounding them were more carefully constructed. As it is though, “The Rhythm Section” is a regrettably half-baked product were some of the ingredients mesh together fine at the expense of an incomplete script and an indecisive vision. … Expand.

Before it leaps off the cliff of cliché into the valley of banality, The Rhythm Section gets in a few good licks. Stephanie Patrick, the wannabe assassin played by Blake Lively, is sure as hell not cut out for the job. She scares easy, fumbles with guns, and cant fight for shit. Charlize Therons Atomic Blonde would laugh her off the screen. But dont mistake this busy-work thriller for a comedy. Based on a bestseller by Mark Burnell, The Rhythm Section is Stephanies origin story, covering her transformation from beautiful Oxford student into avenging angel when she learns from that the death of her parents in a jet crash was no accident. A journalist named Proctor (Raza Jeffrey) informs her that a radical Islamic terrorist bombed the plane on purpose. But it takes three years before Stephanie rouses herself to action. First, she buries her grief in heroin that she pays for by selling her body on the cheap. Yikes. Lively gives everything shes got to the role, including a credible British accent and a willingness to look like crap. Director Reed Morano, an Emmy winner for The Handmaids Tale, never misses a chance to light her fire. So what goes wrong? The problem is the script, written by author Burnell (he has four Stephanie Patrick novels in print to date) whose twists feel generic and narratively lazy. As Stephanie learns the ropes about the killing game from former MI6 agent Iain Boyd (a scrappy Jude Law) — he trains her at his Scotland hideaway — the film goes from unlikely to WTF in seconds flat. Sterling K. Brown shows up as some kind of assassin broker to add another spy angle the movie didnt need. Did producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, gurus of the James Bond universe, want to turn Stephanie into a female 007? If so, their efforts quickly go off the rails. Any psychological probing soon gives way to been-there-done-that action formula, with pop tunes pounding home the obvious. Burnell offers a fancy-pants explanation of the title: “Your heart is the drums, your breathing is the bass — keep the rhythm section tight, and the rest of the song plays itself. ” Does it? Long before the movie drags to an end, you get the distinct impression that there is no one home behind the camera. Lively suffered an accident during production that resulted in lengthy shooting delays. Its a shame no one took that time to fix the mess left behind. For instance, why does Stephanie wear different wigs that have no relation to the plot or to basic logic? You can feel the desperation of the filmmakers as they throw in fist fights, car chases, and, yes, more wig changes to give an illusion of momentum to a grab bag of botched ideas. No sale.

I heard she was afraid to get revenge on the people that killed her family plus she killed a number innocent people trying to kill the people who killed her family. They should call her The Reluctant Vigilante. January 29, 2020 9:00AM PT The plot may be boilerplate in this female-driven revenge thriller, but Blake Lively sells it, playing an action hero who fights like a real person: badly. Its a wonder that Stephanie Patrick makes it to the end of “ The Rhythm Section ” alive. Normal people tend not to survive the kind of sophisticated revenge mission that snaps Stephanie out of her depression and into action-hero mode in Reed Morano s dark, broody and unexpectedly human payback thriller, which stars Blake Lively as a more-motivated-than-coordinated Post Traumatic Suffering Dispenser. Lest you fear any mention of her survival constitutes a spoiler, consider this: The movie was adapted from the first of four pulpy Stephanie Patrick novels written by Mark Burnell, so of course she doesnt die. But she comes awfully close on several occasions, and her near-incompetence in the face of danger makes her relatable in ways very few cinematic assassins have ever been. Paramount is opening the movie in January, the month where Liam Neeson is typically the one to do this kind of dirty work. Lively is hardly the actors obvious substitute, though the character she plays — a rock-bottom junkie prostitute — absolutely convinces she has nothing to lose. Actually, since Burnells novel was optioned by Eon, the production company behind the James Bond franchise, some have wondered whether Stephanie Patricks supposed to be some kind of gender-flipped 007. (No, says Bond custodian Barbara Broccoli. From the very first scene, audiences should realize that theyre watching a very different type of character. In many ways, shes even less like “Atomic Blonde, ” in which Charlize Therons meticulously choreographed, unerringly lethal fighting style is fun to watch but pure fantasy. Stephanie, by contrast, panics under pressure. Shes a bad shot, and an even worse driver. In hand-to-hand combat, she gets thrown around, battered and very nearly killed. Multiple times. The movie begins in Tangiers, where Stephanie has gone to eliminate one of the men responsible for the death of her family. (They died in an airplane bombing, and given the spectacle that might have provided, its a wonder the movie doesnt start there. But then, Burnell adapted the novel himself, so he must have had his reasons. So, in the amuse bouche opener, Stephanie creeps into his home and points her gun at the back of his head. But she cant bring herself to pull the trigger. Could you? “ The Rhythm Section ” features lots of terse, no-nonsense dialogue but some pretty corny voiceover — like the howler Livelys obliged to recite to explain the films title. Standing there in silhouette, her weapon extended, Stephanies all jitters. But thats a much more interesting way to approach her first hit anyway. The only person obliged to be a consummate professional here is Morano, a former DP who helmed the first three episodes of “The Handmaids Tale, ” effectively setting the tone for the hit Hulu series. This is her third feature, following tragedy-porn “Meadowland” and post-apocalyptic two-hander “I Think Were Alone Now, ” and the assignment puts fresh demands on its director. Pulling it off means Moranos obliged to think differently not only about action, but also about how she works with actors. This isnt an easy role, but Lively aces it. Flashing back more than half a year earlier, the film finds Stephanie looking a lot worse for wear, with scars on her wrists and tears in her eyes. To erase the pain of the plane crash that claimed her parents lives, she turns tricks for smack in a squalid London flat. Shes scraping along rock bottom when an investigative reporter named Keith Proctor (Raza Jaffrey) shows up with inside information on the accident — which wasnt an accident but an attack, he insists. According to Proctor, the authorities know who built the explosive device but have left him to walk the streets of London a free man. “Why did you come for me? ” Stephanie asks. Without missing a beat, Proctor replies, “Because youre another victim. Youre just not dead yet. ” But a couple scenes later, Proctors dead, found with his throat slit in his own apartment. His flat has been art-directed to look like a serial killers inner sanctum, and snooping around, Stephanie manages to glean enough from his files to track down his most important source, a nameless ex-CIA operative ( Jude Law) with demons of his own. His damage is nothing compared with hers, however. Stephanies still addicted to drugs at this point, and Lively shows us what that looks like, twitching on top of all the trauma her character is already carrying. The psychology of how this once-promising college grad would transform herself first into such a trainwreck — all bruises and track marks, spiky hair and smoky eyes — and from there into an avenging badass is shaky, but Livelys commitment sells it. Stephanie assumes the identity of a ruthless hitwoman, Petra Reuter (an excuse for wig changes and an attitude makeover) and reaches out to an information trafficker named Marc Serra (Sterling K. Brown) to identify the target we saw her about to eliminate in the opening scene. On paper, the rest of the film seems fairly routine: a series of setpieces against a revolving backdrop of glamorous international locations. Weve seen it in movies like “Atomic Blonde, ” “Red Sparrow” and “La Femme Nikita. ” Those women are all sexy, self-confident killing machines. But what sets “The Rhythm Section” apart is the simple matter of identification. Shes not a natural. She freezes up, and cant do what she was trained for. Instead of fighting, she flails wildly, hoping one of her kicks connects with her adversarys crotch. When she gets hit, it looks like it hurts. And when her gun falls into the bad guys hands, she may as well be dead meat. In the end, its luck, not skill that keeps her alive. Thats how most of us would be in her situation. Moments later, in an impressively staged, single-take car chase, Stephanie/Petra nearly gets pushed off a cliff. And so it continues through the final showdown. Its probably for the best that most action movies dont unfold like this, where careful planning devolves to desperate innovation in the heat of the moment. But this is whats meant by “visceral, ” and it works in this context — and must be an awful lot harder to pull off, behind the camera. Morano manages, and if Stephanie Patrick ever gets another big-screen mission, itll be interesting to see what this experience has taught her. James Bond made his way to Super Bowl LIV, debuting a new trailer for “No Time to Die. ” The footage, putting the spotlight on Daniel Craigs British spy, promises the 25th “Bond” movie will change everything. “No Time to Die” is Craigs fifth take on the secret agent, a role he first assumed in 2006s. Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh take center stage in the new “Black Widow” trailer that dropped at the 54th Super Bowl. Details are scarce on the next Marvel movie, directed by Cate Shortland, but new footage teases Natasha Romanoffs life before she was an Avenger. “You dont know everything about me, ” Johanssons Black Widow says. Tom Cruise has made an enemy in the newest “Top Gun: Maverick” trailer, which premiered during the 54th annual Super Bowl on Sunday. “My Dad believed in you, Im not going to make the same mistake, ” says Miles Teller who is playing Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, deceased wingman to Cruises character. The Sundance Film Festival is fighting a battle thats been building for several years, and what its fighting for can be summed up in one word: relevance. What makes a Sundance movie relevant? In a sense, the old criteria still hold. Its some combination of box-office performance, awards cachet, and that buzzy, you-know-it-when-you-see-it thing of. When Tim Bell died in London last summer, the media response was largely, somewhat sheepishly, polite: It was hard not to envision the ruthless political spin doctor still massaging his legacy from beyond the grave. “Irrepressible” was the first adjective chosen in the New York Times obituary. “He had far too few scruples about who he. Posted on Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 by The Rhythm Section is temporarily halting production after star Blake Lively sustained a hand injury on set. The 2019 spy thriller, directed by  Handmaids Tale director Reed Morano ( who is definitely not making a  Star Wars movie) may have to delay production for up to five months after Lively injured her hand in December and underwent an unsuccessful surgery to remedy the problem. Now, Lively may have to undergo a second hand injury and require more time to recover. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lively injured her hand while performing a stunt on set. After an initial surgery didnt go as planned, sources say that Lively will need a second surgery and a longer recovery time, which puts into question when production can recommence. Morano, who has recently been the source of much buzz after collecting an Emmy for her work on  The Handmaids Tale and holding a mysterious meeting with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, told THR: “[Livelys] okay. Shes just recovering. The problem is that normally, that kind of an injury, you would have four to six weeks of rehab and then you would wear a splint. We have to go into stunts, so its very complicated. ” The Rhythm Section  is based on the Stephanie Patrick book series by Mark Burnell. The spy novels follow a woman who sets out to discover who was responsible for a plane crash that killed her entire family. The movie also stars  Jude Law  and is intended to be the first in a franchise of spy films from James Bond series producers Michael  Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Not much else is known about the film except for the wide array of wigs that Lively will don as Stephanie Patrick, which the actress has been cheerfully sharing on her Instagram. Sources told THR that about half of the movie has been shot, but Livelys injury could push production back another five months. Maybe Lively can get some recovery tips from Tom Cruise, whose death-defying stunts led him to suffer a horrendous ankle injury that delayed filming of  Mission: Impossible – Fallout  for months. But the actor was back on his feet and soon posting more photos of his daring stunts. For now, The Rhythm Section  is aiming for release on February 22, 2019. Cool Posts From Around the Web.

The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section is a group of American studio musicians based in the northern Alabama town of Muscle Shoals. One of the most prominent American studio house bands from the 1960s to the 1980s, these musicians, individually or as a group have been associated with more than 500 recordings, including 75 gold and platinum hits. They were masters at creating a southern combination of R&B, soul and country music known as the "Muscle Shoals sound" to back up black artists, who were often in disbelief to learn that the studio musicians were white. Over the years from 1962 to 1969, there have been two successive groups under the name "Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section" and the common factor in the two was an association with Rick Hall at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals. [1] The original group hired by Hall in the early 1960s was Norbert Putnam, David Briggs, and Jerry Carrigan who created hit records that brought recognition and stature to this unknown and out-of-the-way studio. This group was lured to Nashville studios for independent careers. The replacement musicians were Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, David Hood and Jimmy Johnson; initially called "the Second FAME Gang" but widely known by the nickname "The Swampers" 2. The Swampers subsequently recorded, produced, or engineered classic hits by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Leon Russell, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rod Stewart, Bob Seger and The Staple Singers. The Swampers were the subject of the 2013 documentary film Muscle Shoals, winner of the 2013 Boulder International Film Festival Grand Prize. They were mentioned by name in the lyrics of " Sweet Home Alabama " 1974) by Lynyrd Skynyrd and appear on the cover of Cher 's 1969 album 3614 Jackson Highway. In 1969 the Swampers parted ways with Rick Hall and FAME Studios and founded their own competing business, the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. They also copyrighted the name "The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. New members were Freeman Brown (drums) Jesse Boyce (bass) Junior Lowe (guitar) Clayton Ivey (keyboard) and 4 men brass section. They were a blend of afroamerican and white, and sometimes they were called FAME Gang. Both the original FAME group and the second group (Swampers) have been inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2008. History [ edit] In 1958 Rick Hall, a local musician and songwriter in Florence, Alabama, befriended Tom Stafford whose father owned a pharmacy in downtown Florence. Above the pharmacy, up some rickety stairs, Stafford had some recording gear. [3] He had partnered with Rick Hall and Billy Sherrill to create "SPAR" an acronym for Stafford Publishing And Recording. He asked some 16 year-old members of a local band, Norbert Putnam, David Briggs and Jerry Carrigan, to make some song demos. [3] It was here that these young musicians were first exposed to creating original parts on new songs and they became proficient at it. Also frequenting these rooms were future musical elites such as Donnie Fritts, Spooner Oldham, Terry Thompson and Dan Penn. [3] Stafford and Sherrill later terminated Hall from the partnership, and Hall's humiliation fueled him to attempt to outdo them as their competitor. [4] Muscle Shoals achieves recording industry stature [ edit] In 1961, Hall took out a loan to buy an abandoned brick warehouse in Muscle Shoals, Alabama to make a recording studio. [4] Muscle Shoals is one of four towns in northwest Alabama clustered along the Tennessee River; the others are Florence, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia. His rhythm section (piano, bass and drums) was Briggs, Putnam, and Carrigan. One of Hall's first protégés was an African American bellhop at the Sheffield Hotel named Arthur Alexander who had written some songs. Hall was a demanding taskmaster and his recording session required 30 or 40 takes to get the rhythm tracks he wanted. [3] The song. You Better Move On " rose to number 24 on Billboard's Hot 100 in March, 1962, and two years later cover versions were recorded by both The Hollies and The Rolling Stones. [5] Arthur Alexander was flown to Philadelphia to appear on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. [3] The success stunned the big-city studios; the music industry quickly took notice of this unknown little studio called FAME (Florence Alabama Music Enterprises. Well-known producers began coming to Muscle Shoals to record with this house band to capture the perceived "Muscle Shoals sound. Atlanta producer Bill Lowery brought The Tams who recorded What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am) and Nashville's Felton Jarvis brought Tommy Roe to record Everybody. Percy Sledge 's cousin, Jimmy Hughes recorded "Steal Away" with the same teenaged session players, and it rose to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 [6] It was followed by "Neighbor, Neighbor" and "Why Not Tonight"– both of which made the charts. Hall stated, Those hits showed that FAME could be musically diverse, and they announced our open-door policy toward other labels. 4] Rick Hall's financial success from "You Better Move On" gave him the capital to secure land in Muscle Shoals City where in 1962 he built a first-rate studio at 603 Avalon Avenue patterned after Owen Bradley 's in Nashville. [3] Some 50 years later the building would be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [7] Before long, Nashville music moguls Ray Stevens, Bob Beckham and Felton Jarvis made overtures to lure away Hall's backing musicians, saying that in Nashville, they would make four times the money Rick Hall was paying them. [3] They resigned as a group to pursue independent careers in Nashville, and Hall was without his hit-making rhythm section. The replacement musicians were initially called "the Second FAME Gang" but were later nicknamed "The Swampers. 8] The Swampers' early days [ edit] The core group of Rick Hall's new rhythm section was: Barry Beckett — keyboards Roger Hawkins — drums David Hood — bass Jimmy Johnson — guitar Affectionately called "The Swampers" but later officially adopting the name "The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, this group achieved extraordinary success as one of the best-known group of session musicians of their era. [8] The nickname "The Swampers" was coined by producer Denny Cordell during recording sessions for Leon Russell because of their "funky, soulful Southern "swamp" sound. 9] Guitarist Jimmy Johnson was the first FAME employee, and did many jobs there, including playing rhythm guitar, engineering, and sweeping the floors. [10] In 1964, drummer Roger Hawkins was hired. When bass player David Hood first received the call that a job at FAME had opened up, he was working at his father's tire store. [11] Keyboard player Barry Beckett knew nothing about Muscle Shoals in 1967, but was hired on a session there, James and Bobby Purify 's " I'm Your Puppet. He said, Every night I would just sit there and listen to the tape [still without vocals] over and over again" and said "that was amazing. 11] With no firm job offer, Beckett moved his family from Florida to Muscle Shoals and was eventually hired. On the many hit records out of Muscle Shoals, there were many incidences where other musicians would join or substitute, including Chips Moman (guitar) Junior Lowe (guitar) Dan Penn, Tommy Cogbill, Pete Carr (guitar) Spooner Oldham (organ and piano) 4] According to music writer Carla Jean Whitley, more than a few people were surprised to learn that the musicians backing many notable black artists were white. Whitley said, There were many producers accused of lying [about it. Rod Stewart was one of those who took his producer out and said, seriously. 12] In the early 1960s, it was not a routine practice to have the same musicians as a " house band " for recording different artists; the exceptions being Motown and Stax Records. Hall wanted to obtain a consistent sound rather than have unfamiliar musicians on each session. [11] The New York Times called the The Muscle Shoals Sound "indigenous American music, a distinctly Southern amalgamation of rhythm & blues, soul, and country music. 13] Atlantic Records executive Jerry Wexler became acquainted with Hall and brought artists such as Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin to record at FAME with the group of southern musicians based on their previous string of hit recordings. [14] The Aretha Franklin session at Muscle Shoals [ edit] In January, 1967, Jerry Wexler brought Aretha Franklin, then in her mid-20s, to Muscle Shoals for her first session for Atlantic. [15] During this first session with the Swampers. I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You. Franklin's husband at the time, Ted White, who had been cordial at first, became belligerent. White had secretly been sharing a bottle of vodka with the horn section during the session. [4] 16] White then demanded that Ken Laxton, the trumpet player who was white, be fired for making passes at Aretha. [17] Hall and Wexler reluctantly agreed. About an hour later, White burst into the control room and demanded that the sax player be fired saying "He's flirting with my wife. 4] The producers then fired the sax player. By this time everyone was exhausted and the rapidly-deteriorating session was terminated. An hour or so later, Rick Hall, who himself had begun drinking after the session ended, went over to Aretha and Ted's hotel room at the Downtowner Hotel in Florence "to try to smooth things over" but their hotel room became the scene of a fist fight between Hall and White with Aretha joining in to try to get Hall out the door. [4] Hall then screamed, cursed and pounded the door, arousing Wexler whose room was nearby. [18] Wexler was horrified. Hall went to the lobby, called Aretha's room on the house phone and told Ted he'd better get out of town. [4] They left the following day. The only song that had been finished. I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You. went on to number one on Billboard's R&B Selling chart and number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, so Atlantic Records wanted the Swampers, but without Hall and without Muscle Shoals. [18] The solution was to fly the Swampers to New York to record at Atlantic Studios. Less than a month later, The Swampers were in New York recording " Respect. Aretha's first hit that held the number one R&B spot for eight weeks and was number one on the pop charts for two weeks. [19] Rolling Stone named it as the fifth-best song of all time. [18] Some other songs they did were Do Right Woman, Do Right Man, Think, Share Your Love With Me, and Call Me. [8] The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section becomes independent [ edit] 3614 Jackson Highway September 2007 In 1969, after a financial dispute, the Swampers broke away from Rick Hall and FAME to purchase a tiny studio with burlap-covered walls at 3614 Jackson Highway. [11] They were aided in the process by Wexler, who arranged a loan from Atlantic Records to make much-needed equipment upgrades to 8-track recording machines that were compatible with Atlantic's equipment. The Swampers were to pay the loans back by providing studio time. At first Hawkins and Johnson had more ownership, but they subsequently they made Hood and Beckett equal partners at no cost. [11] The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section created more than 50 hits at this studio. [18] The studio's sole bathroom was often used as a sound booth. The musicians would listen out on the porch to make final judgement on finished songs. David Hood said, The building was a crackerbox building. A loud truck driving down the street or a heavy rainstorm, you'd have to stop working, because it was not built as a studio. It was a just a commercial building that had been adapted for studio use. 17] They asked themselves, What are we going to call this place. David Hood suggested the name, Muscle Shoals Sound" and they all laughed. The joke was that the new studio, technically was in Sheffield, not Muscle Shoals. Only locals would know that because the towns melded together. Since they had had a dispute with Rick Hall, Hood said "So I thought, let's call it ' Muscle Shoals Sound ' just to get at Rick. 17] They also copyrighted the name "The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Things were lean the first year. Finally they had a hit single with " Take a Letter Maria " by R. B. Greaves. The song reached number two on the Hot 100 and was certified gold. [17] In 1971, Atlantic Records moved their Muscle Shoals business to Criteria Studios in Miami and asked the Swampers move there. When the Swampers refused, Atlantic called their loan on the new equipment. About this time, Stax Records in Memphis was facing financial difficulties and began outsourcing work to Muscle Shoals. More and more business from established artists then came to the Swampers, replacing the lost Atlantic business. From this point, the studio began turning out hits such as Leon Russell's " Tight Rope. the Staple Singers. I'll Take You There " and Paul Simon's " Kodachrome. 11] The Rolling Stones [ edit] The Rolling Stones, newly signed to Atlantic Records, arrived in Sheffield, Alabama in December, 1969, two nights after a performance in West Palm Beach, Florida. [18] They had been assured that the planned recording session could be kept secret. The little studio at 3614 Jackson Highway was still in its infancy with only one hit thus far plus a Cher album that was not a commercial success. Rick Hall sardonically said "The Rolling Stones thought they were cutting at FAME. 16] The Stones were there three days, spending most of their time in the studio engineered by Swamper Jimmy Johnson. [18] The first night they recorded You Gotta Move; the second night, Brown Sugar, the third, Wild Horses. Mick Jagger wrote three verses on a stenographer's pad on the spot for "Brown Sugar" which made number 490 on Rolling Stone ' s list of the 500 top songs ever recorded. Swamper David Hood's son who was there said "Their visit was kept a secret from most of the locals, and the world's biggest rock and roll band came, recorded and left (headed for infamy at Altamont, no less) without the conservative townsfolk even knowing they were there" 18] On the documentary film, Muscle Shoals, Keith Richards said of the sessions, I don't think we'd been quite so prolific ever. 20] How a Swampers session was conducted [ edit] When Atlantic Records recorded in New York, the typical procedure was to hire an arranger who would come up with the song style from a demo recording and write out the parts for all musicians. In the session, musicians would come in and just play what was written for them. If it was not successful, the arranger was to blame. [4] In Muscle Shoals and other Southern studios, the process was quite different. The musicians rarely read music, and usually nothing was written in advance; it was called a "head session" 21] As an example, in the Muscle Shoals recording of Wilson Pickett's classic hit. Land of 1000 Dances " Jerry Wexler chose the song– it was to be a cover version of a song by Chris Kenner. In its original state it was much too slow and had a honky-tonk piano sound. Wexler had faith that the Swampers could make something out of it. [4] When the session started, the Swampers began trying different rhythm patterns, dance beats and tempos for the song. After an hour of this, nothing was gelling. [4] Then Chips Moman hit on a guitar lick that set the basic groove and everyone fell in. The arrangement built communally. They decided to break it up by putting a solo drum interlude. During this, Pickett started screaming over the drummer, nah, nah nah nah nah" then said, I need somebody to help me now. It was captured on tape, and the players were summoned to the control room, where Rick Hall shouted, Guys, we are now cutting a smash record. 4] Musicians Moman and Cogbill disagreed saying that there was no intro and no turnaround — the song was far from finished. In Hall's autobiography, he said Pickett suggested singing the count off, one, two, three. 4] Wexler told a different story, and stated, After dozens of abortive attempts, I came up with an idea. 'Sing the counts, Wilson' I suggested. 'Make the counts part of the intro. 21] Hall said that was crazy— who ever heard of singing a count off? Pickett said "let me show you" and got the horn players (Wayne Jackson, Charlie Chalmers, Andrew Love and Floyd Newman) to hit a chord. [21] The now-famous bass lick that followed was actually a second count off, and took trials by three bass players to find something extraordinary. [4] Moman suggested they allow Tommy Cogbill (guitar player) to switch to bass and give it a try. Cogbill put Vaseline on his fingertips and delivered the lick they had been hoping for. [4] Since they were recording in mono on one track, all had to now play it correctly from start to finish. If anyone missed his part, they all would have had to do the entire song from the beginning, and repetition often loses a song's excitement due to fatigue. Hall said, everybody looked at each other like, If you miss this, man, you're dead. 4] When they succeeded there were high fives all around the studio. Hall said, When you hear that record today, you can tell that everybody was feeding off the enthusiasm of everybody else in that room. 4] Later years [ edit] Muscle Shoals Sound - New Location The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section closed the original on Jackson Highway in April, 1979, and moved to a new studio at 1000 Alabama Avenue in nearby Sheffield. The town leaders sold Sheffield's abandoned 31, 000 square feet (2, 900 m 2) Armory to the Swampers at an unbeatable price, to counter a nearby city's offer to lure them away. [11] That year the new studio recorded the Bob Dylan album Slow Train Coming co-produced by Barry Beckett who also performed on it. [22] The new studio marked a new beginning for Beckett, Hawkins, Hood and Johnson allowing them to move toward production and publishing rather than performing. [11] They continued to operate there until 1985 when they closed the business. They sold it to their longtime friend Tommy Couch, owner of Malaco Records, based in Jackson, Mississippi. At that time, three of the Swampers joined other session players, such as the keyboardist Carson Whitsett, backing Bobby "Blue" Bland and other artists recording for the Malaco label. They occasionally worked at other studios. Beckett left Alabama in 1982 to move to Nashville where he became A&R man for Warner Music Group. [23] He later worked independently with Alabama, Asleep at the Wheel, Kenny Chesney and others. He performed on recording sessions until 2005 when health problems forced him to retire. He died in 2009 at age 66. [13] During the 1990s and later, the group continued working as a studio band, often with Clayton Ivey on keyboards, for artists including Gregg Allman ( All Night All Stars) T. Graham Brown, Jimmy Buffett, Melissa Etheridge, John Hiatt, the Oak Ridge Boys, Johnny Paycheck, Etta James, and Joe Louis Walker. [8] Honors and awards [ edit] Lynyrd Skynyrd referred to the musicians as "The Swampers" in the 1974 song " Sweet Home Alabama " Now, Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers And they've been known to pick a song or two Lord, they get me off so much They pick me up when I'm feeling blue Now, how 'bout you? The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, individually or as a group have been associated with more than 500 recordings, including 75 gold and platinum hits. [9] They appeared on the cover of Cher 's 1969 album 3614 Jackson Highway. [8] Four members were inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1995 and also received a "Lifework Award for Non-Performing Achievement. 9] In 2008, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section was inducted into the Nashville-based Musicians Hall of Fame, along with Swampers musicians Pete Carr (guitar) Spooner Oldham (organ and piano) Albert S. Lowe Jr., Clayton Ivey, Randy McCormick, and Will McFarlane. [24] In 2019, the original Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section including Norbert Putnam, David Briggs, Jerry Carrigan, Terry Thompson, Earl "Peanut" Montgomery, Joe South and Reggie Young was inducted; also The Muscle Shoals Horn Section: 25] Aaron Brown, Harrison Calloway, Ronny Eades, Charles Rose, and Harvey Thompson. [26] The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section is featured in the 2013 documentary film [20] Muscle Shoals which won the Grand Prize in the 2013 Boulder International Film Festival. What a great movie. The dialogues between Harry and Sally are extremely funny and interesting, they're basically everything that I like to think and talk about with my best friend. Who is a guy, and not a girl, a thing that is perfectly explained in the movie by Billy Crystal. Except for the dark side thing his character is somebody I really relate to, we just think alike. Great acting, great music, great dialogues(especially by Crystal who, at moments looks like Jerry Seinfeld;I don't know if i's those white sneakers or the dialogues: and a bunch of very funny jokes make this movie a must see for everyone. Oh and a nice touch with those scenes where old married couples explain the (sometimes almost unbelievable) circumstances in which they met. Old people had "Casablanca" this is a movie for the younger generations. And you don't even need the hankies. 9/10.

Plot [ edit] In 1977, Harry Burns and Sally Albright graduate from the University of Chicago and share the drive to New York City, where Sally is beginning journalism school and Harry is starting a career. Harry is dating Sally's friend Amanda. During the drive, Harry and Sally discuss their differing ideas about relationships; Sally disagrees with Harry's assertion that men and women cannot be friends as "the sex part gets in the way. At a diner, Harry tells Sally she is attractive, and she angrily accuses him of making a pass at her. They part in New York on unfriendly terms. Five years later, Harry and Sally find themselves on the same flight. Sally is dating Harry's neighbor Joe, and Harry is engaged to Helen, which surprises Sally. Harry suggests they become friends, forcing him to qualify his previous position about the impossibility of male-female friendships. They separate, concluding that they will not be friends. Harry and Sally run into each other again in a bookstore five years later. They have coffee and talk about their previous relationships; Sally and Joe broke up because she wanted a family and he did not want to marry, and Harry's wife Helen left him for another man. They take a walk and become friends. They have late-night phone conversations, go to dinner, and spend time together, discussing their love lives. During a New Year's Eve party, Harry and Sally find themselves attracted to each other. Even though they remain friends, they set each other up with their respective best friends, Marie and Jess. When the four go to a restaurant, Marie and Jess become fast friends and later become engaged. Over the phone, Sally tearfully tells Harry that her ex is getting married. He rushes to her apartment to comfort her, and they have sex; Harry leaves the next morning distressed. Their friendship cools until a heated argument at Jess and Marie's wedding dinner. Harry attempts to mend his friendship with Sally, but she feels that they cannot be friends. At a New Year's Eve party that year, Sally feels alone without Harry by her side. Harry spends New Year's alone, walking around the city. As Sally decides to leave the party early, Harry appears and declares his love for her. She argues that the only reason he is there is because he is lonely, but he lists the many things he realized he loves about her. They kiss and marry three months later, exactly 12 years and three months after their first meeting. The plot also contains several interlaced segments throughout the film where fictitious older married couples narrate to the camera their stories of how they met. The last couple that is interviewed before the closing credits is Harry and Sally. Cast [ edit] Billy Crystal as Harry Burns Meg Ryan as Sally Albright Carrie Fisher as Marie Fisher Bruno Kirby as Jess Fisher Steven Ford as Joe Lisa Jane Persky as Alice Michelle Nicastro as Amanda Reese Kevin Rooney as Ira Stone Harley Kozak as Helen Hillson Estelle Reiner as Female Customer Production [ edit] In 1984, director Rob Reiner, producer Andy Scheinman and writer Nora Ephron met over lunch at the Russian Tea Room in New York City to develop a project. [3] Reiner pitched an idea for a film that Ephron rejected. [4] The second meeting transformed into a long discussion about Reiner and Scheinman's lives as single men. Reiner remembers, I was in the middle of my single life. I'd been divorced for a while. I'd been out a number of times, all these disastrous, confusing relationships one after another. 5] The next time they all met, Reiner said that he had always wanted to do a film about two people who become friends and do not have sex because they know it will ruin their relationship but have sex anyway. Ephron liked the idea, and Reiner acquired a deal at a studio. [3] For materials, Ephron interviewed Reiner and Scheinman about their lives, creating the basis for Harry. Reiner was constantly depressed and pessimistic yet funny. Ephron also got bits of dialogue from these interviews. [3] She worked on several drafts over the years while Reiner made Stand By Me and The Princess Bride. [4] Billy Crystal "experienced vicariously" Reiner's (his best friend at the time) return to single life after divorcing comedian/filmmaker Penny Marshall and in the process was unconsciously doing research for the role of Harry. [3] During the screenwriting process when Ephron would not feel like writing, she would interview people who worked for the production company. Some of the interviews appeared in the film as the interludes between certain scenes featuring couples talking about how they met, 3] although the material was rewritten and reshot with actors. [6] For example, in the scene where Sally and Harry appear on a split-screen, talking on the telephone while watching their respective television sets, channel surfing, was something that Crystal and Reiner did every night. [6] Originally, Ephron wanted to call the film How They Met and went through several different titles. Reiner even started a contest with the crew during principal photography: whoever came up with the title won a case of champagne. [4] In order to get into the lonely mindset of Harry when he was divorced and single, Crystal stayed by himself in a separate room from the cast and crew while they were shooting in Manhattan. [6] The script initially ended with Harry and Sally remaining friends and not pursuing a romantic relationship because she felt that was "the true ending" as did Reiner. [4] Eventually, Ephron and Reiner realized that it would be a more appropriate ending for them to marry, though they admit that this is generally not a realistic outcome. [7] When posed the film's central question, can men and women just be friends, Ryan replied, Yes, men and women can just be friends. I have a lot of platonic (male) friends, and sex doesn't get in the way. Crystal said, I'm a little more optimistic than Harry. But I think it is difficult. Men basically act like stray dogs in front of a supermarket. I do have platonic (women) friends, but not best, best, best friends. 8] Rob Reiner initially envisioned actress Susan Dey for the role of Sally Albright. When she declined, he later considered Elizabeth Perkins. He also considered casting Elizabeth McGovern. Molly Ringwald was almost cast, but Meg Ryan convinced Reiner to give her the role. Reiner's mother Estelle and daughter Tracy both played roles in the film. Katz's Delicatessen scene [ edit] Film still from the famous restaurant scene Katz's Deli still hangs this sign above the table. In a scene featuring the two title characters having lunch at Katz's Delicatessen in Manhattan, the couple are arguing about a man's ability to recognize when a woman is faking an orgasm. Sally claims that men cannot tell the difference, and to prove her point, she vividly (fully clothed) fakes one as other diners watch. The scene ends with Sally casually returning to her meal as a nearby patron (played by Reiner's mother) places her order: I'll have what she's having. When Estelle Reiner died at age 94 in 2008, The New York Times referred to her as the woman "who delivered one of the most memorably funny lines in movie history. 9] This scene was shot again and again, and Ryan demonstrated her fake orgasms for hours. [7] Katz's Deli still hangs a sign above the table that says, Where Harry met Sally. hope you have what she had. 10] 11] This classic scene was born when the film started to focus too much on Harry. Crystal remembers saying. We need something for Sally to talk about. and Nora said, Well, faking orgasm is a great one. and right away we said, Well, the subject is good. and then Meg came on board and we talked with her about the nature of the idea and she said, Well, why don't I just fake one, just do one. 3] Ryan suggested that the scene take place in a restaurant, 12] and it was Crystal who came up with the scene's classic punchline – "I'll have what she's having. 3] In 2005, the quote was listed 33rd on the AFI's 100 Years. 100 Movie Quotes list of memorable movie lines. Reiner recalls that at a test screening, all of the women in the audience were laughing while all of the men were silent. [4] In late 2013, Improv Everywhere, the New York City initiative behind the annual No Pants Day in the subways and various flash-mob stunts, convened and filmed a re-enactment in Katz's Delicatessen. While a look-alike couple performed the scene, 30 others joined as if it was contagious. Surprised staff and customers responded in appreciation. The film and follow-up interviews are public. [13] In October of the same year, Katz's invited Baron Von Fancy to display his ten-foot-high mural quoting the famous line in its pop-up gallery next door, The Space. [14] Soundtrack [ edit] The When Harry Met Sally. soundtrack album features American singer and pianist Harry Connick Jr. Bobby Colomby, the drummer for Blood, Sweat & Tears, was a friend of Reiner's and recommended Harry Connick Jr., giving the director a tape of the musician's music. Reiner was struck by Connick's voice and how he sounded like a young Frank Sinatra. The movie's soundtrack album was released by Columbia Records in July 1989. The soundtrack consists of standards performed by Harry Connick Jr. with a big band and orchestra arranged by Marc Shaiman. Connick won his first Grammy for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. [15] Arrangements and orchestrations on " It Had to Be You. Where or When. I Could Write a Book" and "But Not for Me" are by Connick and Shaiman. Other songs were performed as piano / vocal solos, or with Connick's trio featuring Benjamin Jonah Wolfe on bass and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums. Also appearing on the album are tenor saxophonist Frank Wess and guitarist Joy Berliner. The soundtrack went to #1 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Chart and was within the top 50 on the Billboard 200. [16] Connick also toured North America in support of this album. [17] It went on to reach double-platinum status. [18] The music in the film is performed by various artists, such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bing Crosby, and Harry Connick Jr. Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] Columbia Pictures released the film using the "platform" technique which involved opening it in a few select cities letting positive word of mouth generate interest and then gradually expanding distribution over subsequent weeks. On its opening weekend, it grossed 1 million in 41 theaters. [19] Billy Crystal was worried that the film would flop at the box office because it was up against several summer blockbuster films, like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Batman. [3] The film went into wide release on July 21, 1989, and grossed 8. 8 million on its opening weekend in 775 theaters. [19] This was later expanded to 1, 174 theaters and the film grossed a total of 92. 8 million in North America, well above its 16 million budget. [19] Critical response [ edit] When Harry Met Sally. received a 90% approval rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes based on 70 reviews, with an average rating of 8. 03/10. The website's critical consensus reads, Rob Reiner's touching, funny film set a new standard for romantic comedies, and he was ably abetted by the sharp interplay between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. 20] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 76 out of 100, based on 17 critics. [21] The film led Roger Ebert to call Reiner "one of Hollywood's very best directors of comedy" and said that it was "most conventional, in terms of structure and the way it fulfills our expectations. But what makes it special, apart from the Ephron screenplay, is the chemistry between Crystal and Ryan. 22] In a review for The New York Times, Caryn James called When Harry Met Sally. an "often funny but amazingly hollow film" that "romanticized lives of intelligent, successful, neurotic New Yorkers" James characterized it as "the sitcom version of a Woody Allen film, full of amusing lines and scenes, all infused with an uncomfortable sense of déjà vu. 23] Rita Kempley of The Washington Post praised Meg Ryan as the "summer's Melanie Griffith – a honey-haired blonde who finally finds a showcase for her sheer exuberance. Neither naif nor vamp, she's a woman from a pen of a woman, not some Cinderella of a Working Girl. 24] Mike Clark of USA Today gave the film three out of four stars, writing, Crystal is funny enough to keep Ryan from all-out stealing the film. She, though, is smashing in an eye-opening performance, another tribute to Reiner's flair with actors. 25] David Ansen provided one of the rare negative reviews of the film for Newsweek. He criticized the casting of Crystal, Not surprisingly he handles the comedy superbly, but he's too cool and self-protective an actor to work as a romantic leading man" and felt that as a film, of wonderful parts, it doesn't quite add up. 26] Accolades [ edit] Association Category Nominee Results Academy Award Best Original Screenplay Nora Ephron Nominated American Comedy award Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture Won Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture Funniest Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture ASCAP Film and Television Music award Top Box Office Films Marc Shaiman British Academy Film award Best Film Rob Reiner Best Screenplay - Original Casting Society of America award Best Casting for Feature Film, Comedy Jane Jenkins Janet Hershenson Chicago Film Critics Association award Best Actress David di Donatello award Best Foreign Director Best Foreign Actress Directors Guild award Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures DVD Exclusive award Best Audio Commentary Golden Globe award Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Best Director - Motion Picture Best Screenplay - Motion Picture Best Lead Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Best Lead Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Writers Guild award Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen Legacy [ edit] Over the years, When Harry Met Sally. has become "the quintessential contemporary feel-good relationship movie that somehow still rings true. 27] Ephron still received letters from people obsessed with the film and still had "people who say to me all the time, I was having a Harry-and-Sally relationship with him or her. 27] The film is 23rd on AFI's 100 Years. 100 Laughs list of the top comedy films in American cinema and number 60 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies. 28] Entertainment Weekly named it as one of the Top 10 romantic movies of all time. Highlight : Went on to be a Trend Setter among Romantic Comedies
"When Harry Met Sally. is one of those rare, one in a million motion pictures that becomes a cultural icon. It's been needlessly ripped off, and endlessly spoofed since its release in 1989. There have been romantic comedies that don't quite appeal to me, but When Harry Met Sally is just wonderful. It is for me everything a romantic comedy should be, funny, witty and charming. The screenplay from Nora Ephron got nominated for an Oscar, and so it should have done. There were times when I laughed out loud (I'll have what she's having) and other times when I was like "that's really sweet. The direction is wonderfully astute and detailed, as is often the case with Rob Reiner ( Director of The Bucket List and A Few Good Men. It's a wonderful romantic comedy about a man and a woman who struggles to keep their relationship afloat after the threat of sex endangers it. Two perfectly cast stars benefit from a sharp script that deeply explores friendship, romance, and the differences between men and women.
The New York locations are really beautiful, and the soundtrack is awesome. The lovely story argues the question of whether men and women can ever have a friendship without sex, and there are so many funny and charming scenes, particularly the fake-orgasm set piece. And of course the acting is outstanding. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan(at her prettiest I think, though she was stunning in Sleepless in Seattle as well) are perfect together, while Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby give a real sense of edge to their supporting performances. Overall, a delightful romantic comedy. Highly Recommended!
My Rating - 9/10.

And, Morgan Freeman narrated some versions. A sophisticated love track... When Harry Met Sally... When Harry Met Sally is a character driven romantic drama about two platonic friends who struggles to see the affection for each other. The chemistry is decent enough to charm their way out, but fortunately it doesn't need to since its writing is the protagonist in itself. The flirty talk, hilarious topics and references, makes the pragmatic conversations thoroughly entertaining and electrifying. Addition to that, Crystal's comic timing and Ryan's support to him, blends in aptly. The structure of the feature is newer and fresh that is respected equally as much as the characters have been. The little nuances like fiddling with the props around the scene and a brief love track narrated by various couple in an interview is just pure delight. Reiner's world is brimmed with such sweet innuendos that makes it utterly pleasing with a big smile on the face that stays with the audience long after the curtain drops. The background score is a bit disappointing along with the sound department although the cinematography (like the phone call between Harry and Sally) play a vital role in storytelling and has fine editing. It is shot with bright and light colors spread across the whole screen that is appealing for the viewers from the first frame. As mentioned earlier, the performance is decent if not anything extraordinary especially by the lead cast Crystal and Ryan. Reiner's execution is unfortunately chalky around the edges but with a sincere heart at the center of it, it sails off the shore safely. Smart and funny conversation, simple and sensible track and, a safer perspective are the high points of the feature. When Harry Met Sally is a sophisticated love track on context of its subjective procedure that even respects the space of audience. … Expand.

My first memory of When Harry Met Sally… is that I wasnt allowed to watch it. When I think about the film now, I see it as a romance—an inverted one, where love does not come until 12 years after first sight, but a love story nonetheless. But When Harry Met Sally… s unwholesome raciness—the faked orgasm, the f-bombs, the woman who meows in the throes of passion—featured prominently in the films marketing campaign. So did the films central, provocative, deeply heteronormative question: Can men and women ever “just” be friends? And it needed an R rating to answer that question, too! The film glowed with forbidden allure. My parents held the common, irrational conviction that watching sexuality was much worse than watching violence. I somehow saw The Killing Fields before I watched When Harry Met Sally…; if you cant guess from the title, The Killing Fields is a harrowing movie about genocide in Cambodia. So what I first learned about When Harry Met Sally…, besides its cast, was that Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm in the movie. Someone had to explain the joke to me after an assembly in which a visiting lecturer made a joke about having a When Harry Met Sally… moment to an auditorium full of middle schoolers. (No one laughed. I wasnt entirely sure what an orgasm was, let alone how to fake one. But it seemed like a power move. Now this movie is one of my formative texts, those stories shelved in your brain that gradually become a part of your psychology. It goes without saying that its magnificent, a combination of talents at the height of their powers, coupled with filmmaking that treasured its characters, atmosphere, and setting. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in Katz's Deli, the site of the famously faked orgasm. Columbia Pictures/Everett Collection. When Harry Met Sally… is a collection of finely hewn set pieces—nearly all of which pivot around nothing more than a conversation. (Marie with the Rolodex at the Central Park Boathouse! Jess and Harry doing the wave in Giants Stadium after Harrys divorce! The “wagon wheel, Roy Rogers, garage sale coffee table”. Ive seen it so many times that I dont watch it so much as remind myself of what happens next, mouthing the dialogue to myself. I realized that I have unconsciously adopted a hairstyle close to Ryans in the film, a curly shag with bangs. Writer Nora Ephron and director Rob Reiner used When Harry Met Sally… as a canvas to explore heterosexual partnership, infusing the leads played by Ryan and Billy Crystal with facets of their respective personalities. Ryan was in her first role as Ephrons muse and stand-in, playing fussiness to the point of painful, adorable tenderness. Crystal was the recipient of Reiners projections, creating in Harry a brooding jokester who prefers sports to feelings. The story springs past Harry and Sallys tortured relationship to explore other characters—notably Carrie Fisher as Marie, Sallys best friend, who inelegantly falls for Harrys best friend, Jess, played by Bruno Kirby. The main story is broken up by little interviews with happily married elderly couples. (The dialogue comes from interviews with real-life couples, but actors were hired to perform the lines onscreen. Its an ecstatic survey of marriage, a loving portrait of loving. And though it is candid about sex, the film is barely racy; theres only one actual sex scene, and its not particularly hot. Its not heaving bosoms and rippling abs; its bookish New Yorkers and a dozen-odd old people talking about their love lives. Ephron and Reiners love language pushed the envelope in 1989 in a way that seems rather tame now: As I grew up and began to dabble in romantic partnerships myself, When Harry Met Sally… felt like the rare option I wanted to emulate and embody, and I studied it like a textbook. In many ways, its a manual for romantic partnership—a funny, entertaining film thats closely attentive to the nuts and bolts of falling in love. Billy Crystal, director Rob Reiner, and Meg Ryan. Columbia Pictures/Everett Collection Still, I understand where my parents were coming from. Watching When Harry Met Sally… as an adult, it feels as if the movie spills some secrets that grown-ups arent supposed to share—about the messiness of attraction, the circuitous path of romance, the erotic tension in spirited antagonism. Its about how another person can become a part of you despite your best intentions. Behind the films wryly entertaining tone, theres a wild liveliness that animates the characters, a combination of deep-seated longings and carnal passions. Harry has to learn to confront his feelings. Sally has to learn to assert her orgasm. Ryan is translucent with her characters emotions, and Crystals never been as darkly alluring, or worn his facial hair better. They have the opposite of a meet-cute in the opening scene—a meet-hate. But Harry and Sallys mutual antipathy still fuels their curiosity about each other, extending their initial conversation into a years-long back-and-forth that becomes their lifelong partnership. The famous question that begins their charged, decade-long dance—the idea of sex—haunts their relationship for more than 10 years, shutting down intimacy, sparking their anger, and occasionally, making them dishonest. When they do have sex, it changes everything. The film is constructed around the idea of Harry and Sallys friendship—and their romance only progresses because they attempt to be friends. But by the end, their friendship succumbs to love; the sex thing, as Harry said from the start, never went away. Billy Crystal. Columbia Pictures/Everett Collection. Thirty years after it premiered, Im finally in the kind of romantic partnership the movie depicts. Im not entirely sure if studying the film has prepared me for this marriage, as I sort of hoped it would. But it was a little affirming, and a little painful, to watch the movie again and feel so close to its ups and downs—the push and pull of intimacy, the slow pace of personal growth. When Harry Met Sally… has served as this example I could keep in my pocket of what love should feel like—an endless, unspooling conversation with a partner who, like a counterweight, provides equilibrium. A postscript: My husband and I are going to be have a Hindu wedding ceremony later this summer, and in an effort to understand what were promising each other, I looked up the translations of the Sanskrit vows. Amusingly, the bride and groom are charged to love one another as friends, even as they explicitly vow to maintain an active sex life. (Other vows: fidelity, mutual support, rights to livestock. Sex doesnt seem to diminish the friendship, but rather to enhance it—and it seems as if thats the hidden postscript of When Harry Met Sally…, lurking under its sexy, rated-R veneer. Perhaps some men and some women cant just be friends. But spouses better be friends already. Celebrities Whove Turned Their Divorces into Art By Ron Galella/WireImage/Getty Images Nora Ephron The late writers first novel, Heartburn, published in 1983, was the exact application of her own advice (recounted in the HBO biographical documentary Everything Is Copy) to “become the heroine rather than the victim of the joke. ” In Heartburn, which was later adapted into a film starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, Ephron wrote about the funniest, saddest, and most jarring parts of her divorce from renowned Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein. In the documentary, late director Mike Nichols summarized Ephrons healing process: “She. cried for six months and wrote it funny. In writing it funny, she won. ”.

Wow, jennifer aniston is really looking rough these days. and i'm sorry to be so shallow, but you can tell she's still trying to be the young looking alpha babe. she needs to give all that up and accept that she's getting older, like each and every one of us. she can't beat the clock any better than the rest of us can.

It should be funny, of course, but it should also be sad at moments, it should be romantic, and it should have something to say about life and people.
"When Harry Met Sally. has it all: You can roll on the floor laughing, when Sally (Meg Ryan) fakes her orgasm at the restaurant. You can cry, when Harry (Billy Crystal) walks the streets of New York City on New Year's Eve feeling lonely and finally realising that he's in love with Sally. Romance is all around, when the documentary couples tell their stories of how they met. And isn't it true that love and sex always come in the way in a friendly relationship between men and women?
This is one of my all time favourite movies. I must have seen it al least ten times, and I still enjoy it.

Sbdy knows where I can see this movie. This is damn paradoxical, in 2001 we had movies about career women and in 2019 we have movie about sugar babies, influencers, princess wannabe dream (ps: we don't have so much princes in Europe so stop dreaming) and Kim Kardashian & Associates type of woman, this is so cruel 😑 Producers ladies from Hollywood I hope you all have horrible nightmares when you sleep at night on your money pillows, good exemples to promovate to the next generations of women what can I say.

I'm also a theatre person, so I spend a good 75% of my life around all manner of orientations.
